Bagua Zhang is one of the three major arts of Chinese Internal Kung Fu, the others being Xingyiquan and Taijiquan. Bagua Zhang, which translates 'eight trigram palm' refers to the diagrams listed in a very ancient Chinese text known as the Yijing. The Yijing or 'Book of Changes' is a Daoist canon used to describe the myriad of combinations we see in nature.

The art of Bagua Zhang is based upon the concept of the Bagua. The Bagua is a group of 8 trigrams positioned to form an octagon upon which fighting techniques have been developed. The practitioner walks the octagon in an almost circular pattern known as 'circle walking.' Circle walking is Bagua Zhang’s signature training practice. Practitioners face the center of the circle and begin walking. Periodically, they change directions and execute martial techniques. Students first learn flexibility through such exercises, then move on to more complex forms and internal aspects similar to Xingyiquan and Taijiquan. Various strikes, kicks, locks, and throws make up this very distinctive martial art style.
