Xingyi Quan (pronounced “shing-yee chwan”) roughly translates from Chinese to English as "Form-Mind Boxing". This is because the practitioner uses the mind and intent to form the postures. The title “Form-Mind Boxing” implies a meditative and internal quality, but this quality is often overlooked due to Xingyi Quan's “no nonsense” approach to self-defense.

Xingyi is one of the three major internal Chinese Kung Fu styles. The other two major internal schools are Taijiquan and Baguazhang. Xingyi is separated from the others by its aggressive characteristics. The art itself is based on linear movements and explosive power. It features quick, shocking hand attacks and direct footwork. The linear nature of Xingyi form is rooted in its military origins and the influence of spear techniques. Despite its hard appearance, the seasoned Xingyi practitioner focuses on the cultivation of 'soft' internal strength or qi, because they realize this is the real essence of achieving internal power.
